Introduction

A spray is liquid that is blown or driven through the air in the form of tiny drops. Here, we make a simple water sprayer using a straw, insulation tape and a small piece of foam.

    • Handle scissors with care.

  1. Fold a straw at the centre. Cut the straw at the fold made. You will end up with two straw pieces. Let's call them straw  I and straw II respectively.

    • The cut straw pieces need not be of the same length.

  2. Cut two insulation tape pieces of length 3-4 cm. Attach them to straw I and straw II. Insulation tape should be stuck at a distance of around 3 mm from one end of the straw. Attach straw I to foam piece.

    • Attach straw I to foam piece.

    • The end of the straw, which is taped, should be properly aligned with the foam piece edge.

    • Attach straw II to foam piece. Straw II should -

    • be perpendicular to straw I.

    • block half of the opening of the straw I at the the edge of the foam piece.

  3. Insert straw II into a cup of water and blow air through straw I. A perfect misty spray should emanate from the junction of the two straws. A perfect misty spray should emanate from the junction of the two straws.
    • Insert straw II into a cup of water and blow air through straw I.

    • If the sprayer doesn't work as intended, ensure that -

    • You are blowing air from straw I (half-blocked straw) and not straw II (unblocked straw).

    • You are blowing air forcefully through straw I and not gently.

    • Straw I and the foam piece are properly aligned.

    • The insulation tape is not compressing the straws.

  4. Vary the diameter of the straw (fat straw and frooti straw). Vary the length of the straw. Vary the diameter and length of the straw.
