Introduction

Using ice-cream sticks and some rubber bands, we create a catapult (trebuchet) of sorts to model possible defenses of a Fort.

Video Overview

  1. Take 10 ice cream sticks and stack on top of one another.
    • Take 10 ice cream sticks and stack on top of one another.

    • Using rubber bands, secure the ends of the stack of ice cream sticks as shown in the figure.

  2. Take two ice cream sticks  and stack them together.
    • Take two ice cream sticks and stack them together.

    • Now, secure the stacked sticks at one end with rubber band.

    • Glue a bottle cap to the free end of the ice cream stick.

    • Pull the two ice cream sticks apart and place the 10 sticks' pile in between them. You may glue the joined ends.

    • Place a nut (or any other weight) on the bottle cap .

    • Pull the bottle cap end of the ice cream stick while holding the other end and release the stick to launch the nut/bead.

    • This now works as a Catapult.

    • Make sure the ice cream sticks are stacked uniformly and wound together.

    • The weight should be small enough to fit inside the bottle cap.

    • The rubber bands should be tight.

    • Identify the fulcrum, load and effort in the catapult.

    • What type of lever order does catapult belong to?

    • Can i change the fulcrum point in the catapult?
