Introduction

Take two cucumber pieces which are almost of the same size. Measure their mass and place one in plain water and another in saturated salt water solution. Measure their on an hourly basis for 4 hours.

    • Dissolve 60g of salt in 150ml water.

      • Saturation of NaCl is 35g/100ml

    • Mix thoroughly and leave it for some time

    • Take 150ml of plain water

    • Immerse one piece of cucumber in salt water solution

    • Immerse another piece of cucumber in plain water

    • After one hour, take out both the cucumber pieces, and wipe them with a tissue paper/cloth and note down their weights

    • In our case, weight of the cucumber piece in salt water reduced from 28g to 27g

    • Weight of the cucumber piece in plain water increased from 28g to 29g

    • After noting the readings, re-immerse the cucumber pieces back in their respective containers

    • Repeat the same steps as in Step 2 for 3 more hours, noting down the readings on an hourly basis

    • A saturated salt solution should be prepared

    • Cucumber pieces should be gently dabbed with tissue paper/cloth

    • An accurate electronic weighing machine, with at least a 1g accuracy, should be used for this experiment
