Introduction

Metals undergo various heat treatment processes like annealing, quenching, tempering, etc., to improve their strength, hardness, toughness, ductility, and corrosion resistance.

In this TACtivity, we heat two pieces of metal wire. Allow one to cool naturally (annealing) while the other is immediately submerged in cold water for cooling (quenching). Observe the physical differences after both have reached room temperature.

  2. Take a piece of metal wire, approximately 5 cm long. With the help of tweezers, hold the  metal wire over the candle flame for about 5 mins. It will take around 3-5 mins for the metal to become red hot.

    • Then allow it to cool down at room temperature.

    • Immediately after heating, immerse the hot metal wire in water.

  4. Play around with both the cooled metal wires and try to bend them. You may observe that the metal wire, which cooled down at room temperature, is flexible and the shape can be altered easily.

    • You may observe that the metal wire, which was cooled in water, is not as flexible as the other wire. It will be very hard to reshape the quenched wire.

    • To achieve the desired result -

    • Heat the wires till they become red hot.

    • Quench the wire in water immediately without any delay.
