Introduction

Place given bar magnet under a white paper and sprinkle iron filings to see the magnetic field lines.

Tools

No tools required.

  1. Pour half of the given iron filings on A4 paper  and place bar magnet under paper .
    • Pour half of the given iron filings on A4 paper and place bar magnet under paper .

    • Now on top of A4 size paper slowly sprinkle the remaining iron filings in all the directions.

  2. Observe the pattern of magnetic field lines.
    • Observe the pattern of magnetic field lines.

    • Check if the iron filings have been sprinkled in all directions around the magnet.

    • The bar magnet once placed on A4 size paper should not be moved /removed.

    • What will happen if magnetic poles of bar magnets are placed close to each other?

    • What will happen when opposite magnetic poles of bar magnets are placed close to each other?

    • What do you notice about the lines of magnetic force? Are the magnetic lines of force stronger at the poles or at the centre of the magnet?

    • Repeat the tactivity using other types of magnets that you have - fridge magnet, ring magnet, neodymium magnet...Observe and compare.

    • Repeat the process by placing multiple magnets under the paper. Also vary the position of the poles.
