Introduction

A lot of metals we see in our day-to-day lives collect rust or get discoloured. The most obvious is iron. Here, with sandpaper, we remove that rust from a rusted nail!

    • Be careful while handling the nail as it is sharp!

    • Do not poke yourself while rubbing the iron nail up and down with the sandpaper.

    • If you cut yourself with the rusted nail, you will need a tetanus injection shot as rusted nails may be infected

    • Hold the iron nail at one end

    • Take a small piece of sandpaper,Rub the rusted iron nail up and down using the rough side of the sandpaper.

    • By using sandpaper, we remove that rust from rusted nails!

    • Collect the red coloured powder that falls off on a piece of paper as you leave a shiny nail behind!

    • Nail not rusted enough

    • Sandpaper not rough enough, or too overused, to remove the rust. Make sure you also scrape while applying adequate pressure.

    • What do you think is the rust that you have collected? Is it pure iron?

    • Rust has a distinctive odour. Have you come across that anywhere else in your daily life? Next time you have a wound, smell some of your blood!

    • What was the colour change in the iron nail after you removed the rust? Note it down.

    • Can you think of any other ways to scrape off the rust?

    • If possible, weigh the collected rust sample. Then weigh the iron nail. Calculate the percentage of rust by mass.
