Introduction

Using colourful thread rolls, each participant plays the role of a different organism, and a food web is built. The devastating effect of extinction is also observed.

  1. Use the given picture as the reference for conducting this tactivity Take yarn rolls of 4 different colours: 4 yellow rolls, 3 purple rolls, 3 white rolls and one red roll Ask children/adults to stand in a circle

Name-tags and pictures of each organism, from different food chains referred to in the picture, will be given to each participant Each participant will stick the tag/picture of the animal/plant s/he represents on their chest The player representing the Sun will be standing outside the circle and will throw the yarn rolls to food producers say corn, sunflower, lavender and mango plants/trees

    • Participants should keep passing the yarn rolls inside the circle following the food chain

  3. For example, when you arrive at grass hopper, it is connected to rat and frog, so that player should have 2 yellow rolls. Similarly, fruit-fly should have 3 rolls and the same continues for the other organisms and a food web is slowly formed! Add a new animal to the final food web to explore changes in nature

    • Remove some animals in the final food web, simulating extinction, and see the gradual collapse of the food web

    • Yarn should be held tight and firmly by each participant

    • Give enough time for children to understand and enjoy the game

    • Try with different combinations of new species and/or extinctions
