Make tweezers using ice cream sticks and aluminium strips. Burn a magnesium strip by holding it using the tweezers.

    • Scissors have functional sharp edges. Contact may result in injury. Always keep blades away from fingers and body. Handle with care.

    • Magnesium is an active metal, people with sensitive skin should avoid direct skin contact.

    • Magnesium burns at high temperatures, please use tweezers while burning it.

    • Be careful while handling metal pieces, they may cut the skin if handled improperly.

    • Burning should be done under adult supervision.

  1. Start by cutting one of the curved edges of each ice-cream stick.
    • Start by cutting one of the curved edges of each ice-cream stick.

    • Keep the cut-off pieces, they will be used later.

    • Now tape the two sticks together at the uncut end. Make two or three turns with the tape.

    • Extend the tweezers with your fingers, such that there is a small gap created in between the sticks, just after the tape joint.

    • Wedge one of the pieces cut off earlier into the space after the tape joint. This will serve as a fulcrum.

    • Make sure the fulcrum piece is recessed into the frame of the tweezers, and does not fall out easily.

    • From the metal can, cut out a rectangle measuring 3.5cm x 7cm.

    • Now cut the rectangle in half to get two squares.

    • Take one of the squares and place it below one of the arms of the tweezers and fold it over. This will make a metal cap at the end of the arm.

    • Make one further fold at the part of the metal extending beyond the ice-cream stick. This will prevent the metal end from sliding on the stick.

    • Now repeat the metal folding process for the other arm. The tweezers are now done.

    • Now light a candle and hold the magnesium strip with the tweezers.

    • Bring the edge of the strip over the flame and observe it as it heats up. Make sure to keep your body at a safe distance from the flame.

    • The magnesium should ignite with a bright flame. Please do not stare directly at the flame for a prolonged period.

    • The magnesium strip should be held by the tweezers securely. If not, adjust the fulcrum piece till gripping becomes easier.

    • The candle flame will take a couple of seconds to ignite the strip, hold it steadily over the top of the flame. You might see a small spark before the strip catches fire.

    • What colour is the flame? Is there a disincentive odour to it?

    • How is the residue left behind different from the original strip?

    • How do you think burning is different from oxidation, if at all?

    • Was this a physical change or a chemical one?
