Introduction

Make tweezers using ice cream sticks and aluminium strips. Burn a magnesium strip by holding it using the tweezers.

  1. Start by cutting one of the curved edges of each ice-cream stick. Keep the cut-off pieces, they will be used later. Choose sticks which are not bent and are strong.

  2. Now tape the two sticks together at the uncut end. Make two or three turns with the tape. Extend the tweezers with your fingers, such that there is a small gap created in between the sticks, just after the tape joint. Wedge or squeeze in one of the pieces cut off earlier, into the space after the tape joint. This will serve as a fulcrum.

  4. Take one of the pieces and place it below one of the arms of the tweezers and fold it over. This will make a metal cap at the end of the arm. Make one further fold at the part of the metal tape extending beyond the ice-cream stick. This will prevent the metal end from sliding on the stick. Now repeat the metal tape folding process for the other arm. The tweezers are done.
    • Take one of the pieces and place it below one of the arms of the tweezers and fold it over. This will make a metal cap at the end of the arm.

  5. Now light a candle and hold the magnesium strip with the tweezers. Bring the edge of the strip over the flame and observe it as it as it heats up.

    • If the magnesium strip becomes coated with an oxide layer or with the soot from the candle, it may not light. In which case, scrape off the coating with scissors or cutters and try again over the flame.

  8. Replace aluminium tape by copper tape in tweezers and try playing with it. Use different type  of flame to burn magnesium ribbon, e.g. propanol burner etc. Change the medium of burning, i.e. burn the magnesium ribbon in an atmosphere of carbon dioxide, or deficient in oxygen!
